Liz Powell is a mixed media fibre artist living on the Far North Coast of NSW in a great little place called Mullumbimby. She primarily uses her hand-made paper as the basis of her work; exploring the versatility of plant fibre papers made from her local environment as well as imported fibre. Besides papermaking, Liz also draws, prints, paints and uses stitch in many of the objects that she makes.
Liz studied sculpture and print making at the National Art School and became addicted to paper making in a workshop with Kathy Nix. She has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years and has taught a range of art practices at secondary and tertiary levels, including tutoring at Textile Fibre Forums in Victoria, NSW and Queensland, Papermakers of Victoria, the NSW Embroiders Guild, and with Regional Development Arts Grants in Queensland.
As an art educator she has a ball introducing others to the joy of “if it works use it”.
Liz is known for her quirky and eclectic approach to materials and themes and recently mounted two solo exhibitions, in Brisbane and on the Far North Coast of NSW. Her work is included in Textile Fibre Forum and The Deckle Edge. She is the author of Truly Simple Plant Papermaking, Tales of Daring Do and Adventures of the not so Famous Four.
