Fiona Duthie is a Canadian fibre artist based on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. She started her first business at age 18, designing and sewing women’s clothing using natural fibres. Twenty-five years later, she continues her fascination with fashion but with an emphasis on hand-felted artwork and surface design.
Fiona first encountered felt-making in 1996 and it immediately became her medium and passion. Raw wools, shibori shaping and dyeing, resist shaping and dyeing, stitches, prefelts, layering, embedding, carving…she explores the world through surface design in hand-made felt.
She says: ‘I explore the windows into the self that we reveal and how they are interpreted differently depending on the perspective of the viewer. The multiple layers, folds and openings in my work represent this concept. I engage with my ideas through sculpture for the human body; in art objects and installations. I work in traditional feltmaking, seamless and dyed after felting. Felting is the language of my hands expressed in sculpture and surface design’.
Fiona teaches internationally and has exhibited her work widely in Canada, as well as the US, New Zealand and the UK.
