Aukje Boonstra attended a stitch workshop in 1996 in which pre-loved garments were cut and reassembled back to front, big stitches were allowed and raw edges encouraged. She instantly felt she had come home.
Since that time, Aukje has built her extensive skills through research, trial & fascination, and asking the all-important ‘what if’ questions. Eco-dyeing is also an integral part of her extensive repertoire, using leaves, sea weeds, and barks with skills and to great effect.
For Aukje, textiles carry stories; with the essence of previous times and places embedded in the cloth. Working with those precious materials and turning them into unique wearable art pieces is her passion.
Having made the repurposing of clothing, eco dyeing and hand stitching her areas of expertise over the past 20 years, she is a popular and enthusiastic teacher.
